About Us
Company / Brand
Costa, Costa & Oliveira, Lda, was founded in 1991, in Santa Maria da Feira, which means the company is located in one of Portugal’s most renowned clusters of footwear production.
The company has always worked for the foreign markets: initially in Europe and, later on, in countries a little all over the world, from Colombia to New Zealand, from Sweden to Greece and Israel, among others.
Working in the international markets has given us the opportunity to follow the most recent fashion trends and to be aware of all relevant developments in the footwear industry. Therefore, it is only natural to invest in new technologies and in employee training, including with regard to sustainable development.
Always attentive to the world around it and to the changes that affect each and every one of us every day, Costa, Costa & Oliveira Lda. couldn’t ignore the increasingly pressing need to work more and more in harmony with our planet, making our modest contribution to its protection.
With this awareness came the desire to be alongside the growing number of people who are concerned with the sustainability of the fashion industry. And, in quite a natural way, the brand NOKOMENTS emerged – a footwear brand with an ecological vision, in favour of a more sustainable world.
NOKOMENTS shoes are characterised by simplicity, irreverence and a young feminine rebelliousness, with great attention to comfort, details and vegan and eco-responsible constituents. The colours and type of materials also fit perfectly into this harmony with the planet.

Leathers
- MORE ECOLOGICAL – Vegetable tanning produces a more sustainable product. The exemption of heavy metals and the use of strictly plant extracts make it recyclable. This method reduces the amount of water needed by 50% compared to chrome tanning.
- CHROME-FREE - The technique of vegetable tanning has been improved over the years and nowadays the result is a product of choice. It has no added chromium or other heavy metals, so it is free of carcinogenic products.
- BREATHABLE - The material resulting from vegetable tanning is permeable; it absorbs and releases moisture easily creating a comfortable user experience.
- ANTIBACTERIAL - Plant extracts create an environment that is not conducive to the spread of bacteria. The material resulting from vegetable tanning is antiseptic and antioxidant, decreasing the likelihood of creating skin irritation and leaving it free of bacteria.
Textil and Other
- SUSTAINABLE FABRICS -Fabrics, fibres, yarns and dyes that are manufactured and processed in a sustainable way. "Sustainable" means, above all, that it has been made from natural fibres, whenever possible from organic farming, and that it is less polluting.
- SLOW FASHION – In contrast to fast fashion, it emerged as a more sustainable socio-environmental alternative. It values diversity, prioritizes the local over the global, practices real prices that incorporate social and ecological costs and maintains its production between small and medium scales.
- TRANSPARENT PRODUCTION SYSTEMS – In the slow fashion model, there is more transparent information about the real origin of the producers, thus being a model of greater proximity between the actors. Slow fashion sustainable products have a longer life because, instead of being quickly discarded, they offer something specific and unique to the consumer and promote reuse.
- CONSCIOUS CONSUMPTION – Responsible brands are concerned with avoiding slave labour and reducing the impacts of the production chain on the environment. Conscious consumers look for products with sustainable, quality materials and greater durability.
Outsoles
- RECYCLED – The soles are made from the incorporation of residues resulting from the sole injection process itself or residues from other industrial sectors.
- INDUSTRIAL ECOLOGY – In the sole production, it is also possible to incorporate waste from other industries. An example of this is the case of cork shavings resulting from the production of corks, rice husks and leftover used tires.
- CIRCULAR ECONOMY – We refer to the process of manufacturing soles without any animal product. Designed with recycled materials and the incorporation of industrial waste, raw materials are permanently reused, thus creating a circular economy, without waste.
- BIODEGRADABLE SOLES – The soles that use biodegradable material are distinguished by their fast and efficient combustion in a controlled environment. According to European Standards EN13432 and EN14995, a material is considered biodegradable when it decomposes by at least 90% in 6 months.
The careful selection of materials that create the products of NOKOMENTS implies a 360º analysis of the best eco-conscious solutions available on the market. We privilege materials certified by the main internationally endorsed entities. We can take the following as examples:
(People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) – PETA is the world’s largest organisation dedicated to animal rights. It informs policymakers and the public about animal abuse and promotes kind treatment of animals. The PETA-approved seal verifies that companies with that certification do not conduct or commission any animal tests on ingredients, formulations, or finished products and that they pledge not to do so in the future. It’s also the entity responsible for the Vegan Fashion Awards.
Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is the worldwide leading textile processing standard for organic fibres, including ecological and social criteria, backed up by independent third-party certification of the entire textile supply chain.
Having one common standard, textile processors and manufacturers can export their products with one organic certification that is accepted in all major markets. This transparency also gives consumers the power to choose truly organic products sourced from green supply chains
Global Recycle Standard (GRS) is a global non-profit that develops, manages, and promotes a suite of leading industry standards, as well as collects and publishes critical industry data and insights that enable brands and retailers to measure, manage and track their use of preferred fibres and materials.ns
SEAQUAL INITIATIVE is a community which brings together individuals, organisations and companies, to help clean the oceans and raise awareness of the issue of marine plastic pollution.
Worldwide, there are a growing number of ocean clean-ups (events or programs performed by registered organisations to clean marine litter from beaches and coasts, ocean floor and surface, rivers and estuaries) that collect all types of waste, including plastics and mixed material items.
SEAQUAL INITIATIVE’s goal is giving a new life to all types of marine plastic. Today, all transformation of marine plastic by SEAQUAL INITIATIVE takes place in Europe. This marine plastic has been retrieved by ocean clean-ups in Europe, the Mediterranean and the west coast of Africa.
The plastic portion of marine litter is cleaned and transformed into SEAQUAL® MARINE PLASTIC at SEAQUAL INITIATIVE approved facilities. It is then returned to industry to be transformed into beautiful, new, sustainable products. Upcycled Marine Plastic by SEAQUAL INICIATIVE has material traceability and certification.
Brands and Manufacturers from more than 60 countries have joined this fight against marine litter and use SEAQUAL® MARINE PLASTIC to create inspiring sustainable products.
